When do babies roll over is a tricky question to answer. Since every baby is different. Some learn to roll over early while some may take time depending on their physiology. Generally, it takes about 5 months for a baby to learn how to roll over i.e. from back to tummy and from tummy to back. The first set of action (from back to tummy) is the easier one since in the early months the babies spend a lot of time lying on their backs, so this action comes naturally or instinctively. Once he/she develops a bit of head control and can sit on his own with or without support he/she will be able to roll over from back to tummy. This usually takes around 3 months. The later action (from tummy to back) is a slightly difficult one since more muscle control and stronger neck and arm muscles are needed, though a baby doing this manoeuvre first is perfectly normal.

How do Babies learn to roll?

Generally, babies figure this stuff out naturally. To roll over the strong neck and arm muscles are required. When the babies lie on their back for long they try to raise their head move their arms and kick. If those actions happen in such a fashion which supports rolling over, it happens. The first time is always a surprise, not just for you, but for them too. Once it happens, it’s bound to happen again. After three to four times he/she figures it out. Similar is the case for rolling from tummy to back. When placed on stomach a baby may try to raise his or her head by raising the shoulders using the hands for support. This may look like a mini-push up. This actually makes the babies muscles strong. This is beneficial for overall growth rather than just rolling over. Another thing he/she might try to do is arc the back. Slowly the arm muscles will be developed and the baby will do that mini-pushup which will, in turn, lead to a rollover from tummy to back. The head rising, back arching, kicking and pushes will help him/her to roll over in both the directions.

Need a boost?

Though babies learn to roll over naturally it’s perfectly fine to encourage him/her. You can use toys or maybe yourself. When you start to notice rolling tendencies in your baby you can toys beside him so that he may try to fetch it and in the process rolls over. You can also sit beside him extend your arms in a welcoming manner; he/she may want to get close to you and again in the process may roll over. During the first few times make sure your baby doesn’t get hurt. When he has finally started to roll make sure he/she is not placed at any elevated places unattended. You can also try keeping big pillows as a guard, but still, never leave your baby unattended.

Not Rolling?

If your baby doesn’t roll it’s fine too. Some babies directly move on to sitting, crawling, standing etc. but if by the end of 6 months your baby isn’t doing either of the activities make sure to visit a doctor.

Conclusion

Babies have high growth rate. Rolling is a great way for your baby to exercise. Make it fun for them. Make sure your baby gets to learn new activities both physical and mental for overall growth.
